Silly stuff

I'm going to use this page to share science videos, pictures, jokes, you name it! Basically anything I've stumbled on and thought was interesting, cool or just downright wacky. If you have any suggestions, let me know and I'll post them too!

If you are in need of a way to procrastinate then look no further. Here are a five of my favourite comic strips, the ones I have selected all having a (loosely) science based theme.

1) http://xkcd.com/

"A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language"
These stick men sure are pretty clever, and funny to boot. The guy who writes these used to work for NASA building robots, a clear transition to webcomics then...

#89: Arsenic Based Life - one conference I'm glad I wasn't invited to...

Guaranteed giggles for students or anyone who has ever studied. PhD comics is a comic strip about "life (or the lack thereof) in academia". Written by a PhD graduate from Stanford University, sometimes a scarily accurate representation of my life...

# 1363: A familiar sight around the Faul Group lab!

I had to include two from PhD comics, pretty sure anyone would recognise this kind of schedule;
# 1376: Another productive day in the life of a student.

Most of the Perry Bible Fellowship strips have nothing to do with science but that doesn't stop them from being damn funny. The strip was originally published in the Syracuse University newspaper 'The Daily Orange' but has become a phenomenon in its own right.

# 237: Lyles Constant - and who said science can't be sexy..?

4) http://www.sciencecartoonsplus.com/pages/gallery.php

Written by an old-school cartoon genius. Hailing from New York, Sidney Harris has been drawing since the 50's but is still as sharp as ever.
I know how he feels...

Bring along your sense of humour for these dark, offensive yet hilarious strips. With new strips almost daily there's enough here to keep you entertained for a very long time. Not particularly science-y again but I love this strip and picked one to suit the theme;

Combust: science + god = explosive mix

Ok, so I said 5 but wanted to add this one in. A mix of beautiful photography and clever captioning, 'A Softer World' is aesthetically pleasing as well as wickedly funny.

And I leave you with that, happy time wasting!

Firstly something to get you in the festive spirit... This is a  video I found today where researchers at the University of Nottingham write on a snowflake! They use an electron microscope, (which works in a similar way to a regular microscope but uses electrons instead of light to visualise the sample) to firstly visualise the snowflake. They then use a focused ion beam to blast away material and write a message, I won't spoil it, you have to watch to find out what! (If you get bored of the guy talking, skip to about 55s for the good part)

It's so cool! Just a shame they didn't focus the image after writing the message.
